Studying local history through prime sources report, 1976.

The "Report on the pilot program studying local history through prime sources" was submitted to the Vermont Historical Society in 1976 upon successful completion of a special VHS Bicentennial grant written by teachers Nancy Calicchio, Laura Heller, and Dorothy Richardson. Students at the Putney (Vermont) Grammar School used reproductions of primary resources to study local history. The report includes guidelines for teachers (defining primary sources and how to reproduce them), sample reproductions, student work, and a bibliography of materials for both students and teachers. During the course of the six-week project, students in the grades 6-8 used documents, letters, and journals to investigate the character of Putney Village in the nineteenth century. Each of the five units (town development and village life; the farmer; nineteenth century life expectations; research on an individual and his occupation; and, diaries and journals) include a content outline, reading and sources, and activities. Also included in the collection are newspaper clippings related to the implementation of the project in 1976.
